I have always maintained that medicinal cannabis resides in a middle ground between herbal medicine and conventional pharmaceuticals. Herbs can be powerful but are often very subtle and may not have a pronounced effect on a chronic or acute ailment such as chronic or acute pain. Pharmaceuticals on the other hand are designed to create a very specific action and can be very powerful. Some medications are so targeted and pronounced in their effect on the system that in cases such as Benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome, the user can become physically unable to stop using the drug without dangerous side-effects.
In the middle of these two extremes is cannabis, which as a whole plant can be far more powerful than most herbs, but is not strong enough to cause toxicity to the body or shut down organs. THC, the primary constituent of cannabis, is closer to pharmaceuticals on the spectrum because it can have a powerful effect on the mind and body, and some users find that they have a difficult time going off the drug. CBD is closer to the herb end of the spectrum but it can still be powerful for users.
I have clients who have tried many different healing modalities, allopathic remedies, and a wide variety of herbs, supplements and medications, yet CBD was the compound that ultimately helped their difficult to treat ailment. Sometimes CBD can help immediately and sometimes it takes several weeks for the body to utilize effectively the toning and regulating effects of the compound. If you have acute ailments such as pain, anxiety, issues with the gut, neuropathy, mood swings, etc. then trying CBD to mitigate these issues is recommended.

If you are generally healthy you might feel CBD is unnecessary. The discovery of the endocannabinoid system is still quite new as far as medical science is concerned but it is a system in our body that is essential for keeping our nervous and immune systems regulated. There is even speculation that deficiencies in the endocannabinoid system may be connected to some difficult to treat conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Migraine and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The endocanabinoid system may also be a factor in slowing degenerative brain diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease. One could argue that taking a daily maintenance dose of a small amount of CBD and even THC as an adult can help keep the body balanced and tone the system to withstand the effects of aging. CBD does not have to be taken every day however. Some users who are treating chronic ailments such as anxiety find it helps to keep CBD built up in the system with a daily dose, but if the toning aspect of CBD is successful, the goal of CBD is to take it for a period of time—perhaps 6-12 months—and then decrease or taper off entirely because it has effectively balanced the system. Then, a user can utilize CBD on an as-needed basis. Others may know that their ailment is going to be with them for their whole life, but instead of taking unwanted pharmaceuticals, they take CBD and THC daily to keep their symptoms manageable.
